Why You Should Not Refill Single Serving Water Bottles

We've all done it, but we suggest you think twice before doing it again.

For example, #1 polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE), the most comon resin used in disposable bottles, is safe if only used once. Used again they can leach chemicals such as DEHA, a known carcinogen, and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), a potential hormone disrupter.

The January 2006 Journal of Environmental Monitoring states that some PET bottled-water containers were found to leach antimony, an elemental metal that is an eye, skin, and lung irritant at high doses.

The plastic in #1 single serving bottles is porous, so swigging from a refilled one will likely give you a dose of bacteria as well.
